Everyday vacuuming
Regular vacuuming removes grit that wears fibers from the inside. Vacuum in the direction of the pile when possible.
Use a suction-only setting or turn off the beater bar—rotating brushes can pull pile and damage fringes
Vacuum both the face and, when practical, the reverse for rugs that can be safely flipped
Avoid vacuuming fringes; instead, gently shake or brush them by hand
High-traffic areas benefit from more frequent light vacuuming rather than occasional aggressive cleaning
Spills and spots
Blot immediately with a clean, white, absorbent cloth—never rub, which spreads the stain and felts wool
Work from the outside of the spill toward the center
For many water-based spills, a small amount of cool water on a cloth can help lift residue after blotting
Avoid harsh household cleaners, steam mops, and undiluted detergents on handmade rugs
For wine, pet accidents, ink, or unknown substances, blot and contact us promptly for professional advice
Sunlight, furniture, and rotation
Natural dyes and fibers can fade with prolonged direct sun. Rotate rugs 180° every few months so wear and light exposure stay even. Use furniture coasters or occasional repositioning to limit crush marks on pile.
A quality pad protects the rug and your floor, reduces slipping, and absorbs footfall. Choose a pad cut slightly smaller than the rug so edges sit cleanly. Keep rugs away from persistent dampness and ensure good air circulation under large pieces when possible.

Most fine rugs benefit from professional cleaning every two to three years, sooner in homes with pets, children, or heavy traffic. Antique, silk, and fragile pieces need methods matched to their construction—not a one-size-fits-all machine wash.
Moths and storage
Keep rugs clean; soil attracts pests
If storing, wrap in breathable materials (never airtight plastic for long periods), and check periodically
Watch for thinning pile, webbing, or larvae—early treatment prevents larger loss
